Role Overview
Irwin Group is recruiting experienced ship’s fitters to train as Dimensional Control Surveyors using Automet and Leica Total Stations. This role offers a career transition from hands-on fitting into a specialist technical surveying position supporting marine repair and retrofit projects worldwide.
No prior surveying or Automet experience is required. Full training is provided.
Why Ship’s Fitters Are Ideal for This Role
If you have experience aligning pipes, fitting flanges, working from drawings, and making components fit in tight shipboard spaces, you already understand the principles behind dimensional control. This role moves you from physically fitting components to defining and measuring how they fit.
The Role
- Measure existing pipework and structures onboard vessels
- Capture accurate geometry using Leica Total Stations
- Produce digital survey data and 3D models using Automet
- Support prefabrication by ensuring replacement spools fit first time
- Work onboard ships in engine rooms, pump rooms, and confined spaces
- Travel internationally to support repair and retrofit projects
Who We’re Looking For
- Experienced ship’s fitters, marine steel fitters, or pipefitters
- Comfortable working onboard vessels and in confined spaces
- Able to read drawings and work accurately to dimensions
- Good spatial awareness and attention to detail
- Willing to learn new technology and travel internationally
- EU passport required
- Engineering degrees are not required.
